Map of Debden Woodland

The Present and the Future

At only slightly over seven hectares in size, Debden Woodland is relatively small but performs an important link for both people and nature that in turn helps to create a significant piece of public space and once again creates the historic link between Epping and Hainault Forests.

Both of these forests formed major wooded areas within the Great Forest of Essex established by the Normans shortly after 1086. The Debden woodland is a vital fragment of ancient woodland rich in biodiversity and containing a significant number of Ancient Oak and Hornbeam Pollards, numerous Ancient Hazel and Hornbeam Coppice Stools and a scattering of rare Wild Service trees

A number of wetland areas (stream, pond and seasonal ponds) also add to this rich mix, creating yet another important biodiversity habitat along with a small meadow area dotted with occasional ant hills.
