Wildflower & Wellbeing Make a Difference Day

1st August 2022 : 1 - 4pm

Come on a guided wander through the wildflower meadows, with the chance to make a difference by getting involved in a little hands-on conservation work through weeding, and counting butterflies.

A free event run by partners of the Get Cumbria Buzzing project, the National Trust and Cumbria Wildlife Trust with a brief introduction to the 5 ways of wellbeing and background to the conservation work taking place on site followed by a guided walk through the flower rich grasslands with plant identification and survey work to contribute to the national survey by Butterfly Conservations, the Big butterfly count. Also a spot of hand weeding of docks, thistles and ragwort as we go. Booking is essential through the Cumbria Wildlife trust what’s on webpages https://www.cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk/events

Children must be accompanied and a maximum group size of 15 people.

Please wear trousers and long sleeved clothing to ensure all skin is covered to give protection from the sun, plants and animals.

There is a toilet available at the meeting place before we begin the walk. Gloves and survey forms and equipment will be provided.

Meet outside Wellington lodge, next to the Candlestick Chimney, on Rosemary lane, Whitehaven CA28 9AD.

There is a 20m climb from the meeting point to the meadows, then we will be going off the surfaced paths and into the long vegetation to do the survey work. The ground is uneven and you will need to bend down to make observations.

Free parking for 30 vehicles at Haig Pit car park off Solway road, Whitehaven, CA28 9BG with a 10 minute walk to the meeting place heading north along the coastal path towards Whitehaven or pay and display parking in Whitehaven with a 10minute walk to the meeting place heading south along the coastal path.
