'The Lady' inspires new cheese

24th March 2016

Renowned cheese producer, the Northumberland Cheese Company, has announced the launch of a new cheese – their first for six years and a cheese with a name that was truly inspired by its surroundings – Northumberlandia – available from 21st March 2016.

Northumberlandia is named after the huge iconic land sculpture on the Blagdon Estate, 10 miles from Newcastle, which is also home to the Northumberland Cheese Company.

‘Northumberlandia’ is a unique piece of public art set in 46 acres with 4 miles of footpaths open to the public – an inspiration to visitors who are amazed by this vast land sculpture and also to those who know and love the diverse landscape of Northumberland – like Martin Atkinson, Production Manager at Northumberland Cheese, who created this new cheese.

“Northumberlandia has a high level of acidity, which lends itself to a crumbly texture, and a complex finish,” says Martin. “To diversify our offering, we wanted to experiment with maturation within a wax coat, and the result is a firm and creamy cheese, but with a slightly drier texture than some of our other farmhouse cheeses.  Northumberlandia is a beautiful landmark, evolving through time, like the maturation of the cheese. We are confident Northumberlandia will become a mainstay on the cheese board as a quality cheese, inspired by this iconic 21st century image of Northumberland.”

A tangy cheese which is suitable for vegetarians and crumbly like a Cheshire, with a fresh taste that will appeal widely to eat on bread, crackers as well as on its own,  Northumberlandia is set to wow cheese lovers. Encased in a black wax coat, a nod to the mining legacy of the land sculpture, this cheese is fantastic paired with a hearty red wine or a hoppy bitter, and benefits from a sweet chutney.  Not only that, its name comes with its very own anecdote for the dinner table.

Northumberlandia is available to order from 21st March 2016 and a donation from the sale of the cheese will be given to the Land Trust to be used to go towards keeping the 46 acre ‘Northumberlandia’ looking her best.
