Silverdale Country Park has been recognised for its continued excellence as an outdoor space retaining its Green Flag status in this year’s Green Flag Awards.
The former colliery site, near Newcastle under Lyme, was first given Green Flag status in 2017 with its efforts around biodiversity, habitat management and community engagement praised by the panel.
The site has been under the management of the Land Trust since 2009, and in that time has become the heart of the local community, providing a dedicated space that people can enjoy and where nature thrives. It hosts a range of events and activities throughout the year and is also a vital urban habitat for a variety of species.
Sarah Palgrave-Neath, estates manager for the Land Trust said:
“We are delighted that Silverdale Country Park has retained its Green Flag Award. Receiving this recognition two years in succession is testament to the continued excellence of the site and is a fitting tribute to the hard work of our park ranger Andy Hunt, and all our wonderful volunteers who make such a valuable contribution to the site.
“We know people feel healthier and happier when they’re outside and we have set high standards in our management of the park and the visitor experience and it is fantastic to see these efforts publicly recognised once again.”
The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the UK and around the world.
They are judged by more than 700 green space experts who volunteer to visit sites and assess them against strict criteria including sustainability, horticultural standards and level of community involvement.
