The Lockwood Road underpass leading into Phoenix Park in Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire, has undergone a dramatic transformation thanks to a local artist and nearby residents.
Funded by and in partnership with Goldthorpe, Bolton & Highgate Big Local community group, artist Peter Deakin was commissioned to work with the community to create a bright and welcoming mural.
Peter held workshops with schools, scouts, community groups and libraries, giving young people the chance to develop their creative skills and connect with the project.
Over a week in August, dozens of people then worked together to bring the final design to life, painting the 76 metre mural featuring trees, flowers, animals and reminders of the area’s mining past.
