Carols in the Countess of Chester Country Park

The Friends of the Countess of Chester Country Park kicked off the festive season last week when they welcomed local schoolchildren to their Carols in the Park event.

Along with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), who manages the site on behalf of the Land Trust, the Friends hosted their third annual carol singing afternoon with pupils from Dee Point Primary School on Friday.

A variety of classic carols were sung by the school’s choir in front of the park’s Christmas tree as the night sky drew in over Chester.

The children had also sung at Storyhouse earlier in the afternoon, where they joined other schools last month to sing as part of the BBC’s Children in Need telethon. They chose to finish with the song they sang at that event: A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman.

Dave Williams, Head teacher of Dee Point Primary, said, “During the festive period, our school choir love entering into the spirit of Christmas.  This really comes to life when we perform outdoors in the perfect setting of the Countess of Chester Country Park; the cold air, soft voices and warm-hearted support of friends and volunteers makes for a magical Christmassy experience.”

After the singing Andy & Morag Scargill from the Friends group and Neil McMahon from TCV presented the school with a copy of The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane in recognition of the way they have helped them protect the wildlife and their habitats in the Countess Park over a number of years.

School activities will continue on the park in the New Year, which will include educational sessions and Forest Schools.
