Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park in London has been included in this year’s prestigious list of parks and green spaces to be awarded Green Flag status.
The urban oasis in the heart of Greenwich was assessed by expert judges who recognised the excellent management, biodiversity and community benefit of the site.
Simon Pile, Estates Manager for South East England at the Land Trust, said: “We are delighted to receive recognition for the transformation at Greenwich Ecology Park since we took ownership in 2011.
“The partnership we’ve had in managing this site with The Conservation Volunteers has seen this space go from strength to strength. It provides a setting for children to learn about the environment and wildlife on their doorstep, whilst playing host to many other community events and activities.
“I think it’s been important for the community to have this space, which encourages people to spend time outdoors, exercise and relax. Research has proven that this can improve park users’ physical and mental health.”
Receiving Green Flag status means the sites are now internationally recognised as quality, well-managed green space. In the past, the award has been known to improve health and education, reduce crime and improve the general cleanliness of an area.
