Environment and biodiversity

We want our parks and green spaces to be as rich in biodiversity as possible.

We manage our sites to create great places for the trees and flowers, bugs and birds as well as our visitors to enjoy.

These rich spaces need careful management and as many of our sites have had an industrial or development history, it can sometimes take a long time to establish the right conditions. But nature is amazing, create the right habitat and it develops and flourishes.

We are proud that a number of our sites are an important resource for biodiversity and nature conservation and are have achieved SSSI and BSI status – see our award winning spaces.

Our performance is reported each year in our Annual Report and Accounts.

Canvey Wick Nature Reserve in Essex, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is home to more than 1,400 species of insects; many of which are rare and endangered, including the Shrill carder bee.

The Void area of Silverdale Country Park in Staffordshire was designated as a Site of Biological Importance (SBI) in early 2015.

Since the end of World War Two, 97 per cent of our wildflower meadows have been lost, leaving important species such as bees in trouble. We are helping to create and enhance meadows to support these important species.

A Heron showcases the biodiversity of the Land Trust's sites

Many of us have a lot to thank the Land Trust and Green Angels projects for.  I may not have got my new job without doing the Environmental Education course you facilitated and Grow Green Liverpool wouldn't have existed either.  You've helped me to achieve something I've been trying to do for about 4 years now and I really appreciate that. Add to that the friendships we've formed too and that really is precious.
