As the Land Trust celebrates its 15th birthday the charity’s staff will be taking on a challenge to walk 15,000 miles in a calendar year to mark the occasion.
Starting on 19 July, the Land Trust team will have 365 days to complete the distance required and will track the miles they walk or run on social fitness network, Strava.
With 40 staff based across the country the required mileage for staff to complete is just over a mile a day.
Land Trust Chief Executive, Euan Hall, explains more:
“The great thing about spending time outdoors is that you don’t have to spend hours doing it in order to notice improvements. Walking just a mile a day can improve your mood, boost your immunity and help you sleep better at night.
“We work with the communities around our sites to encourage them to live healthier and more active lives and we want our staff to feel the benefits of this approach and we’ll be encouraging activities such as lunch time walks which will hopefully be fun and have a positive impact on health and wellbeing.”
One of the Land Trust’s five key charitable objectives is health and improving the physical and mental wellbeing of the residents who live around our sites.
Many of our sites and parks offer health activities such as walking, running and Green Gym classes. We also work with partners to maximise the mental health benefits that can be delivered associated with spending time in well managed green space.
In 2018 we published the results of our Health for Life project, which was run in partnership with the Natural Health Service Centre of Excellence, which includes both the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University. Over 700 health activities were organised at Countess of Chester Country Park with the health and wellbeing of participants monitored at the start and end of the project. The results were very positive with notable improvements in people’s mental health associated with spending time in well managed green space.
