Green Flag flies at five Land Trust sites for second year

16th July 2019

Five parks owned and managed by the Land Trust have retained their Green Flag status.

Elba Park, Silverdale Country Park, Beam Parklands, Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park and the Countess of Chester Country Park were all recipients of the award in this year’s announcement.

Elba Park retains its status for a remarkable seventh year in succession, while Silverdale Country Park keeps its Green Flag for a third year in a row.

The prestigious award recognises excellent management of green space. Green Flag spaces must feel welcoming and cared for, be well maintained and clean and encourage users to enjoy health activities. The sites must be managed in a way that has a positive impact on the environment, both locally and globally and should aim to enhance biodiversity. Finally it recognises how green spaces bring people together and meet the needs of the community they serve.

Alan Carter, Director of Portfolio Management at the Land Trust, said:

“We are delighted that five of our sites have been awarded Green Flag status for the second year running.

“One of the main things that makes these parks excellent is the hard work and dedication of our passionate rangers and volunteers. Their commitment for these spaces is transferred to the communities who value the green spaces they have.

“Research shows that spending more time outdoors improves both mental and physical health and wellbeing, so to have the flag proudly flying and encouraging more people to use our spaces is fantastic.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said:

“It’s fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners.”

“Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement.”

Receiving Green Flag status means the sites continue to be internationally recognised as quality, well-managed green space. In the past, the award has been known to improve health and education, reduce crime and improve the general cleanliness of an area.
