Lakes within urban developments

It's great to see developers starting to recognise the added value of incorporate green and blue infrastructure into their new developments. Not only can wetlands / lakes, if managed properly help reduce flood risk and support vital biodiversity, they are add benefits to people's health and wellbeing. 

It is just important to ensure there is a long term funding structure in place to manage and maintain these assets well into the future.

A number of our sites, adjacent to developments have lakes, ponds and wetlands, such as Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park in London, and we see time and time again how valued this haven is for people and wildlife within such an urban setting.

The physical inactivity epidemic

With 41% of middle aged people failing to achieve 10 minutes of continuous brisk walking per month, according to Public Health England, it's costing the UK economy £7.4 billion a year, including £0.9 billion to the NHS alone. 

This is why it is so important for people to have safe accessible green public open space with paths and trails to encourage an active lifestyle. And by ensuring green open space has sustainable investment to manage it long term, will contribute to helping improve active and healthy lifestyles and and reduce costs on the UK economy.

Parks need to be well maintained to be accessible for all

Good to see the health sector recognising that if parks are well managed and safe, they are more accessible to everyone - helping people to lead healthier lives and be active. 

Particularly, with the recent news about how middle-aged people aren't getting enough exercise - with 41% not even doing a 10 minute brisk walk a month!
