A Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG) is a protected green space designed to mitigate recreational pressure of new residential developments on protected ecological areas, such as Special Protection Areas (SPAs) and Special Areas of Conservation (SACs).
Traditionally, SANG were owned and managed by local authorities. However, it is becoming increasingly common for developers to set up their own SANG and for these to be managed by organisations such as the Land Trust, allowing them to retain control of strategic capacity and commercial value.
The Land Trust is the largest private SANG owner in the Thames Basin Heath SPA and the largest SANG owner in Devon, with around 400 hectares of SANG over 14 sites.
We prefer to be engaged at the earliest opportunity, and provide end-to-end SANG services, including site identification, planning and design support, cost management, and long-term maintenance.
