Debden Woodland

A precious ancient woodland sitting on the borders of Essex and London

This vital, precious ancient woodland, named Longshaw and Broadfield Shaw, is located on the borders of Essex and London, in a key location between the town of Loughton and the newly created wood in Theydon Bois woodlands.

At only slightly over seven hectares in size, Debden Woodland is relatively small but performs an important link for both people and nature. This link, in turn, helps to create a significant piece of public open space and once again creates the historic link between Epping and Hainault forests.

This vital ancient woodland in Essex has been safeguarded thanks to an innovative partnership between the Land Trust and the Woodland Trust.

The Trusts will work together to enable the sustainable management of the ancient woodland, which is in a key location between the town of Laughton and the Woodland Trust’s newly planted Theydon woodland.

Both forests are important parts of the Great Forest of Essex established by the Normans after 1086. Debden woodland is a vital remnant of ancient woodland, rich in biodiversity, featuring numerous ancient oak and hornbeam pollards, as well as rare wild service trees.

A number of wetland areas also add to this rich mix, creating yet another important biodiversity habitat along with a small meadow area.

This space is managed in partnership with Woodland Trust.
