Phoenix Park

A creative community woodland where art, wildlife, and industrial history come together

Phoenix Park is located where the Hickleton Colliery once stood. After the colliery closed in the 1990s, the derelict and contaminated site was remediated by the regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward with funds from the Homes and Communities Agency’s National Coalfield Programme.

Today, the park is a popular woodland featuring innovative structures and iconic art features as part of a sculpture park, which was designed by the local community with assistance from Groundwork Dearne Valley.

Uphill towards the top of the woodland is a flourishing wildlife area where brown hares and birds of prey are a common sight, along with summit views towards the Peak District.
