The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) encompasses three key areas: birds, science, people. BTO work to secure a better future for birds and nature, using science, monitoring data to inform good environmental decisions. Their priority is to make a positive impact for birds using strong and objective science in partnership with other organisations, members and volunteers.

From April through to June 2026, the public is encouraged to get outdoors, visit public-access greenspaces and log what birds they see. Open to people of all ages and experience levels across the UK, it’s a fantastic opportunity to interact with wildlife and get involved in providing invaluable data to BTO that will shape guidance on land management centred around birds and people.

By simply recording which greenspace participants visited, how long they spent there, which birds they saw and how many, they will be contributing invaluable data.

BTO will be hosting a free to join online webinar “Birds in Greenspaces: How you can get involved” with internal team members as well as with the Green Angels – The Land Trust on Tuesday 7th of April, 7pm – 8pm

The session will be covering:

▪️ An introduction to the Birds in Greenspaces survey
▪️ How to effectively survey birds in your local greenspace
▪️ Tips for identifying and recording birds during the survey
▪️ Ways to continue monitoring your park after the project ends
▪️ How to get involved

The Land Trust’s Chief Executive, Alan Carter speaks on the collaboration “It’s great to see the number of mutual benefits of the two charities working alongside each other. From encouraging people to get outdoors and interact with nature, to utilising the findings to inform decision making within land management to benefit birds in greenspaces and in turn, local communities.”
