5th March 2026
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls”, an important day to reflect, recognise and celebrate the value women bring to our industries and to our lives.
Here at the Land Trust, we’re proud to have women from a range of backgrounds contributing to decision making and bringing their skills, insight, and leadership to our work. We’re also pleased that 66% of our Leadership Team is made up of women, helping to shape our organisation and contributing to the success of us delivering £76.9million in social value.
Research shows that women often adapt their behaviour when visiting parks and greenspaces, avoiding certain times of day, choosing not to go alone, or limiting visits altogether due to safety concerns. As a result, the well documented health and wellbeing benefits of accessible greenspace are not always equally experienced by women.
Addressing this imbalance is essential. Our work to improve accessibility and safety for women across Land Trust sites is ongoing and remains a key priority. On-site rangers, clear signposting and exit routes, well maintained sight lines, and a programme of free activities all help build a sense of ownership and community. From buggy walks to group volunteering and family events, these initiatives encourage participation, increase awareness, and support a more inclusive experience for everyone.
Our Green Angels programme that offers free environmental training at a number of Land Trust sites across the country empowered 374 women in 2024-2025, 65% of total participants, to get outdoors, connect with nature and learn new skills. It’s incredibly rewarding to hear from the women who have joined the Green Angels to learn what they’ve gained “I feel inspired and more confident to volunteer on practical tasks after completing the course” and “’I have gained the skill and confidence to use different tools and I enjoyed meeting with the other members of the group”
Organisations must continue to prioritise equity, both within the workplace and in the communities they influence. When this commitment is sustained, the positive effects extend far beyond the organisation itself and contribute to a healthier, more inclusive society.
