Dawlish Countryside Park opened in 2017 as the first Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG) in Greater Exeter. The purpose of this and other local SANGs is to mitigate the potential increased recreational pressure of new housing on the Exe Estuary Special Protection Area (SPA), Dawlish Warren Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and the East Devon Pebblebed Heaths SPA/SAC by providing alternative recreational areas that offer a similar experience to the SPA/SAC.
The Land Trust took over responsibility for Dawlish Countryside Park in November 2021 and manages the site in partnership with Teignbridge District Council which undertakes the day-to-day site management.
Teignbridge District Council is working in partnership with The Land Trust to maximise the benefits for the local community from this important public greenspace. Current and future management seeks to enhance the biodiversity and recreational value of the site.
