Rabbit Ings Country Park is a 64-hectare green space near Royston, South Yorkshire, developed on the former site of Monkton Colliery and Royston Drift Mine, which closed in 1989. The site was officially opened as a country park in 2011 and came under the management of the Land Trust in 2012.
The park features soaring footpaths with panoramic views, alongside woodland and wetland areas that support a wide range of wildlife. A distinctive rabbit image carved into the hillside—created with help of192 local schoolchildren—is visible from miles away. Inspired by Norse symbolism and the site’s name (‘ings’ meaning wetland), the design reflects the area’s identity and history. Today, Rabbit Ings offers a peaceful and engaging space for walking, wildlife watching, and connecting with the local landscape.
