Fryston Country Trails

A former colliery site transformed into a thriving riverside parkland

Fryston Country Trails is a 65-hectare green space in Castleford, transformed from the former Fryston and Wheldale colliery sites. Through extensive reclamation, the area has become a flourishing hub for wildlife, recreation, and community engagement.

Visitors can enjoy over 8 kilometres of scenic footpaths, cycleways, and bridleways that weave through meadows, woodlands, and along the River Aire. The site also supports educational opportunities with an outdoor classroom and a riverside wharf, making it a valuable resource for local schools and families. With a dedicated play area and accessible paths, Fryston is designed for all ages to enjoy, and stands as a proud example of land regeneration and community-focused green space.
