Site size: 65 hectares
The Fryston Country Trails were developed through the reclamation of the former Fryston & Wheldale colliery sites. The 85ha site was transformed through investment by the Homes & Communities Agency’s National Coalfield Programme. The Land Trust took ownership in 2012, holding an endowment which secures the future of the trails as a community asset and protects the investment made in the regeneration of the area.
The creation of these attractive trails was part of a wider regeneration scheme of the area called the Castleford Project, which was featured in Channel 4 documentary. The restoration of the site was led by Wakefield Council, Yorkshire Forward and the local residents supported by the Castleford Heritage Trust. The trails provide over 8km of footpaths bridleways and carriageways and other educational & learning opportunities including an outdoor classroom and river wharf.
