Environment and Biodiversity
The value of green space to the environment Many of the UK’s native species are in decline but
cannot be overestimated. Our parks, nature with careful management and encouragement,
reserves and urban spaces create places for even the smallest of spaces can become havens
nature to flourish, but equally provide vital for wildlife. We are committed to appropriately
mitigation against flooding and pollution, developing the habitats on each of our sites,
protecting communities as well as wildlife. focusing particularly on those which already exist
Our management allows us to conserve and creating new homes for nature to support
and protect these areas whilst building declining or endangered indicator species
resilience and creating places for in line with local Biodiversity Action Plans.
communities and nature to enjoy.
BioBlitz and new species
Identifying and creating a variety of
habitats across our sites means that we
are able to work towards monitoring and
protecting species. We have introduced
a series of BioBlitz events across our
sites (community based species count
and identification days) to find out just
how diverse our sites are becoming.
They bring together local volunteers with
our rangers and identification experts to
create a picture of the biodiversity on our
sites. We have had some amazing results;
recent surveys at our Greenwich Peninsula
Ecology Park have identified several high
priority species including two bees and a
wasp not previously recorded in the UK.
