Kiveton Community Woodland

Region: Yorkshire

This woodland is a natural space of remarkable diversity, providing a vast array of habitats including woodland, grassland wetland. The bird life on this part of the site is particularly impressive, especially in springtime when masses of Skylarks are present.

The Present and the Future

An amazing variety of informal play and recreation takes place on the flat area close to the main entrance which also includes a performance amphitheatre that is a popular location for community events.

As you cross a small bridge and head up the striking zig-zag path to the viewpoint you enter a delightful wilder world where nature thrives. The paths on this part of the site take in a vast array of habitats including both mature and new woodland, natural grassland and a variety of wetland. The adjoining fishing ponds are a magnet for wildlife, as well as anglers.

The many successful events that are held here reflect the diversity of people that enjoy the woodland. The Kiveton Brass Band Festival attracts visitors from around the region whilst the increasingly popular Urbfest is a cutting edge urban festival.

History

Kiveton Community Woodland is a thriving woodland created after the demise of the former Kiveton Colliery. The woodland and is providing proof that a long term approach to management and community engagement can provide lasting benefit to the community.

The Colliery was closed in 1994. So in common with countless other towns built upon one industry, when Kiveton Colliery closed its effect on the community was more than just the loss of jobs. The problem was compounded because the Colliery’s closure left behind a large area of derelict land. The derelict and contaminated site was remediated by the regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward with funds from the Homes and Communities Agency National Coalfield Programme. The Land Trust provided a sustainable and cost effective exit for the landowner, protects the money invested in restoring the land, and covers environmental liability associated with the site past history.

Development

The Land Trust management delivers a range of added value activities to be held at Kiveton.  One very successful event held here is Buggy Fit; a one hour workout for new mums that is a mixture of power walking with strengthening and toning exercises although it’s the social element of the activity that many mums value.

Restored and funded by Yorkshire Forward and the Homes and Communities Agency National Coalfields Programme.
