Work on Heritage Visitor Centre at Port Sunlight River Park begins

17th September 2018

The Land Trust is delighted to announce that work on the installation of a Heritage Visitor Centre at Port Sunlight River Park is now underway.

The centre, which will be managed on behalf of the Land Trust, by project partners North-West charity Autism Together, will have a significant impact on what is already a hugely popular site, which currently attracts 50,000 visitors a year.

The work on the site is due to be completed before Christmas with a range of archaeological excavation activities run by Chester based Social Enterprise Big Heritage, due to begin on the site in early spring.

The project has been made possible following a £450,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

Euan Hall, chief executive of the Land Trust, said:

“We are delighted that work is now underway on the Heritage Visitor Centre.

“Through our work with the Alliance Manchester Business School we know that Port Sunlight River Park has already made a hugely positive impact on the surrounding area, particularly on house prices and the local economy, and the development of the visitor centre will allow us to continue that positive work and build on it.

“One of the Land Trust’s key five charitable objectives is education and the new heritage centre and the appointment of a new Community Education Officer at the site will give people the opportunity to explore Bromborough’s unique heritage.

“This project simply wouldn’t have been possible without The National Lottery so we would like to once again thank them and their players.”

A former landfill site, Port Sunlight River Park opened in 2014 and provides visitors with a scenic waterfront and a variety of walks offering stunning views across the Mersey to Liverpool’s iconic waterfront. It is an important area for large populations of water birds and is a site of special protection.
