BLOG: Getting outdoors through social distancing

20th March 2020

For many people, it feels like life has been turned on its head and the future is uncertain and worrying.

The prospect of staying indoors and isolating is daunting and unwelcome, but it’s important that everyone looks after themselves and each other in this strange time we’re going through.

However, the world outside our four walls is still there, and spring is still gracing us with beautiful blossom and fabulous flowers.

Nature is still here for us. We need to make sure we’re using it.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it a thousand more times if we need to: spending time outdoors has a really positive effect on our physical and mental health.

The majority of our green spaces remain open at this time and we encourage anyone who needs a break from their home to take some time to visit if safe to do so.

It’s so important to ensure you’re looking after your physical and mental health at the moment. A quick stroll in the park each day could make a big difference to how you feel.

We’ve put together some tips for getting outdoors if you’re trying to keep your distance:

  • Find a good route – try to find somewhere with some greenery that isn’t crowded and gives you some good quality fresh air. Consider how long you want to spend outside and any challenges you might face on your route.
  • On your own? That’s ok! Phone a friend or listen to a podcast – If you’re fed up of your own thoughts and fancy some company on your walk, speaking to a friend or family member on the phone or listening to a podcast can help lift your spirits and provide some company.
  • Leave the news at home – It’s easy to go outside and still scroll on your phone. Try to keep yourself occupied without looking at the latest updates.
  • Take it all in – This is a great time of year for nature. There’s lots of flowers popping up and the trees are blossoming. Take in the beauty of nature and look out for the daily changes in your surroundings. Many people are sharing photos of what pretty views they’ve seen in their park, which can be a welcome sight on social media at the minute.

  • Keep looking after yourself and others – If you’re taking a walk or run with someone else, remember to keep your distance. Kindness and consideration is so important, so remember to share a smile and keep in mind the health of yourself and your loved ones.

We’re going to be keeping you updated on the government’s latest advice regarding spending time outdoors in the coming days, weeks, and maybe even months.

We’ll be here to provide ideas for activities, information about the changing seasons, and hopefully some light relief from the challenging times we’re facing.
